Durante le sessioni di Zazen è importante mantenere la spina dorsale eretta e questo può essere agevolato con oggetti, come lo Zafu, il cuscino da meditazione, e il tappetino Zabuton, che permettono di mantenere le anche più in alto delle ginocchia. Inoltre, l’isolamento dal pavimento, consente di non avere un contatto diretto con superfici fredde o umide.
La meditazione è una pratica salutare alla portata di tutti. Può essere praticata nelle 4 posizioni fondamentali che il corpo assume nel corso della vita: stare seduti, in piedi, sdraiati o camminare. La posizione più comune per la meditazione è quella seduta, in quanto facilita particolarmente la concentrazione. La posizione assunta dal corpo deve facilmente permettere di rimanere a lungo vigili e al contempo in uno stato di riposo, in modo che il corpo sia “silente” per tutta la durata della seduta, senza il minimo disagio.
Stare con la schiena eretta, in particolare, consente di rimanere vigili, come quando si sta in piedi o si cammina, ma al tempo stesso di mantenersi stabili, come quando il corpo è sdraiato.
Se si sceglie un luogo adatto e lo si prepara con cura e se si predispone il corpo a favorire la postura corretta, si può entrare in contatto con l’energia vitale e rigenerante che la meditazione regala.
